Some people are assertive or active; they want to shape or change their environment to better suit themselves. Others are more responsive; they tend to accept things as they are and try to do the best job possible within their environment. Using these four factors: task vs. people, assertive vs. responsive, we can place people into one of four quadrants.

We may not be able to change others, but each of us can make simple, smart behavior adaptations ourselves to improve our interactions with others. That's what Interpersonal Effectiveness is all about - getting along with others in a particular situation to accomplish certain goals. The situation may be at work, at home, in school or in the community, but it's success depends on our ability to function successfully with others - even though they behave very differently! |
