How Effective Are Your Interactions with Others?

Do You Recognize the Impact of Your Behaviors on
Your Relationships?

We may each think we know the answer, but very often our intended effect is quite different from what people actually experience when they interact with us. (Think about those less-than-successful-interactions you can recall - did you really INTEND for that to be the outcome or could you actually be less effective than you’d like?!?!)

So do you ever wonder why...

You get the reaction or response from others that you do?

You have friction with someone though you're both
working for the same goals?

Some people get bogged down in detail and
can't see the big picture!?

Some people can't keep up with the pace of change?
Yet others seem to thrive on creating change?

Some people can only see the big picture and
have no patience for detail!?

We could go on with "wonder why's", but you know the point...people are different! We behave differently, we're driven by varied needs...and we aren't going to change others, are we?

Some people are assertive or active; they want to shape or change their environment to better suit themselves. Others are more responsive; they tend to accept things as they are and try to do the best job possible within their environment. Using these four factors: task vs. people, assertive vs. responsive, we can place people into one of four quadrants.

We may not be able to change others, but each of us can make simple, smart behavior adaptations ourselves to improve our interactions with others. That's what Interpersonal Effectiveness is all about - getting along with others in a particular situation to accomplish certain goals. The situation may be at work, at home, in school or in the community, but it's success depends on our ability to function successfully with others - even though they behave very differently!

At ALD, we approach Interpersonal Effectiveness by understanding behavioral styles according to the DiSC® Dimensions of Behavior from Inscape Publishing.

This educational instrument is based on the time-tested DiSC theory that provides powerful insights into your work and social style. It will enable you to DiSCover and define how you view yourself and how you want others to see you. And through that process, you will learn more about the real you - there may even be some surprises.

We've used DiSC® in classes and in coaching because it is straightforward, specific about behaviors and it's accurate - people always comment about how "on-target" the profile is - and if people believe in the profile's accuracy, they are more willing to initiate behavior adaptations.

What is DiSC?

DiSC® isn't an exam; there are no "right" or "wrong" answers . It is a tool for helping you DiSCover and analyze your own behavioral style so that you can better adapt your behavior to particular situations and create more productive working and interpersonal relationships with others.

DiSC is a model of human behavior that helps people understand “why they do what they do.” The dimensions of Dominance, influencing, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness make up the DiSC model and interact with other factors to describe human behavior.

Originally created by Dr. William Marston at Columbia University and researched and updated by Dr. John Geier and Inscape Publishing at the University of Minnesota, the DiSC model and its training assessments and various other tools have helped over 35 million people in 20+ languages over the last 40 years.

Over the years, many other researchers have built on this four-dimensional model of personality, making it one of the most popular systems for teaching people about behavioral styles. Our collection of reports is based on the following DiSC factors:

Dominance
The drive to control, to achieve results. The basic intent is to overcome.

Influence
The drive to influence, to be expressive, to be heard.
The basic intent is to persuade.

Steadiness
The drive to be stable and consistent.
The basic intent is to support.

Conscientiousness
The drive to be right, sure and safe.
The basic intent is to be correct.

DiSC Profiles come in two formats:

DiSC Classic
 and Everything DiSC

DiSC Classic - The line-graph representation of DiSC used in
DiSC Classic
is a very powerful tool. Read about the DiSC Classic Profiles below or use this link to view them.

Everything DiSC - The circular representation of DiSC opens up new possibilities for DiSC practitioners. This representation allows participants to quickly understand relationships in the DiSC model and recognize patterns within group dynamics.

The Everything DiSC® assessment also helps people quickly internalize the ways that they might need to stretch in their daily lives and the stress that this causes. And perhaps most important, the circular representation makes the DiSC model more intuitive and memorable while building on its inherent richness.
